Touring Eastern Cape

EASTERN CAPE

norush_ec_tsitsi.jpgThe Eastern Cape is one of Africa’s rare and unspoilt gems, offering great diversity.  Discover superb beaches on its wild coast, the vast Karoo landscape with unforgettable star-studded night skies, charming, historic towns, and a warm welcome.  Port Elizabeth, East London and Graham’s town are in the province, as well as Umtata in the Transkei.  Qunu in the Transkei is the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, who is affectionately known as Madiba.  The Eastern Cape, a land of undulating hills, expansive sandy beaches, majestic mountain ranges and emerald green forests, is the second-largest of the nine provinces in terms of surface area.

The shoreline of this province extends from the Umtamvuna River in KwaZulu Natal, to the Storms River mouth on the scenic Garden Route, in the west, and stretching inland, to the north, bordering on Lesotho. Today, the Eastern Cape incorporates the previously independent `homelands’ of the Ciskei and Transkei. Read More »

Touring Gauteng

September 6th, 2008 by admin

norush_gt_klipkerk.jpgGAUTENG – PLACE OF GOLD!!

Gauteng is situated in the north-eastern part of the country, and is landlocked, bordered by Limpopo in the north, Mpumalanga in the east, Free State in the south, and North West in the west. The province mainly comprises the three urban areas:
Pretoria, Johannesburg/Soweto AND Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark industrial complex.

Gauteng  was created by the ANC in 1994 after the country’s first all-race elections, uniting six regions, including part of the old Transvaal province, into what might be the smallest South African province, but serves as the gateway into Africa.  Johannesburg and Pretoria are the two major cities in Gauteng.  There is more to Gauteng than the art of business and money-making.   Whilst Gauteng’s history lies embedded in the discovery of gold, today Gauteng not only has one of the best infrastructures, but its population of over 9 million people form part of a vibrant mix of energy and diversity that make it one of the wealthiest provinces in Africa.

Gauteng’s main attraction is big business, but there is so much more … museums, galleries, historical battlefields. Gauteng is also an entertainment playground offering world-class restaurants, shebeens, shopping malls and music venues.

The province is characterized by rolling hills, fold mountains and flat, savannahs with sporadic scrub brush. Acacia trees are the original flora, but foreign species of trees include Jacaranda trees with their purple flowers in October and Eucalyptus trees in woody clusters. There are a few streams (named “rivers”), but the Vaal River to the south and the impressive Magaliesberg mountains to the north form natural boundaries. Read More »

Touring the Northern Cape

August 7th, 2008 by admin

norush_nc_namaqua.jpgEscape to the tranquil beauty of clear skies and vast open plains and desert that is South Africa’s largest province, the Northern Cape. Enjoy the wide, open spaces of the golden deserts by day and the clear black star-studded skies by night. The Northern Cape holds many stories and is a treasure trove of unexplored adventure, from the rock art of the fearless San people to the treasure hunters after the most precious gem found in abundance in the area – the rare and beautiful diamond.

The vast and arid Northern Cape is by far the largest province, slightly bigger than Germany and taking up nearly a third of South Africa’s land area. Yet it has the country’s smallest population.

The province lies to the south of its most important asset, the mighty Orange River, which feeds the agriculture and alluvial diamonds industries. The river forms the border with the country of Namibia in the north, while the Molopo River is at the border with Botswana to the northeast.  The Northern Cape landscape is characterised by vast arid plains with outcroppings of haphazard rock piles.

The capital is Kimberley, on the province’s eastern border. Other important towns are:   Upington, Kuruman, Springbok and De Aar.  The Northern Cape can be divided into three regions: Namaqualand in the west, the Kalahari in the north and the Karoo. Read More »
